Ethiopia has had a continuous existence as a nation for over two thousand years and during most of these times its contact with the rest of the world has been minimal. Ethiopia has been able to preserve a rich and unique culture, mainly because of its geographic isolation, and the fact that it was the sole black African country to maintain its dependence against foreign encroachment. Christianity has been and still in the dominant religion, and was introduced in the 4th century making Ethiopia the oldest Christian nation on earth. Islam was introduced in the 7th century. Jewish influence pent rated Ethiopia during the era of the Askum kingdom and left an important mark on the nations religious customs remnant of these converts persists to this day in the ‘falashas’ of the northern Ethiopia whose preservation of a observe the Sabbath day as normal practise.
